I Am A Girl

so I watch every Rom Com and Disney movie I can get my hands on
have a mini crush on every guy I meet
paint my nails obsessively
freak out over a broken nail
take too many pictures, especially of myself
cry
try on multiple outfits before deciding what I'm going to wear
wish on shooting stars and dandelions
have really long hair that can be found randomly around the apartment
still jam out to NSYNC
and the Backstreet Boys
and Taylor Swift
and some Justin Bieber.
I'm pretty convinced I want to marry Adam Young.
My heart literally melts when I listen to old love songs
or see cute couples
or read poetry
or see flowers of any kind
or falling leaves and snow
or anything classified as "cute"
or "baby"
or chivalrous.
I post on Facebook way too much
would wear a dress everyday if it was practical
continue to worry about my looks no matter how many times I hear they don't matter
or that I'm pretty
talk about boys, a lot
love pink and purple and lace and sparkles
compliment everyone on everything I love

Now I'm not saying this is ALL that I am.  I can watch some nerdy sci-fi, work hard, get dirty, ect.
But most importantly, I am a girl

and for this I make no apologies

Into the Woods

I went camping in Provo Canyon this weekend. It turns out that when you go camping in college with friends and without any "adults" you are left with a lot of important decisions to make. So here is a recap of the ten biggest decisions we made:

1. Before you go camping you can leave it up to chance that all of the poles are in the tent bag OR you can set up your tent once before leaving just to make sure you can.  I think we made the right choice this time.

Although we maybe didn't need to set it up inside an apartment and put two tables, a couch, and fan inside of it.

2. When selecting a campsite you can just pick whatever place pops up first in your google search for campsites OR you can carefully search for and select the very safe sounding campground that hasn't had any bear sightings this season.

It turns out the extra search won't matter because there are bears everywhere in the Utah mountains, specifically one mile north of Hope Campground three hours before our arrival.

3. When you are driving to your campsite AT NIGHT along a winding, wooded, mountain road and you see a dark man walking in the shadows along the side you can either keep driving and avoid any chances of being murdered by a hitch hiker OR you could offer him a ride, find out he is a UVU student named George who is camping with a bunch of his friends a few sites away, and get invited to chill with them around their fire later in the evening.

4. You can have the boring traditional s'mores for you dessert OR you could go all out and toast marshmallows for s'mores, roast starbursts, and bake chocolate cakes inside oranges (here's how)!! You bet your bottom we went with the second option!

5. When roasting those marshmallows you can either wait patiently and toast them to a warm and fluffy golden brown "perfection" or you can stick them right up by the fire so they'll burst into flames and within a few second the inside will turn into a molten glob of heaven.

6. When in the woods you can act civilized and sit at the picnic table playing cards and staring at the scenery OR you can embrace your inner wild woman and climb a really skinny tree. I did both because the scenery is sooo worth staring at:

7. In the morning you can enjoy fluffy chocolate chip pancakes over the fire OR you can totally fail at making pancakes and substitute leftover hot dogs and s'mores for breakfast. (ok, technically we didn't make this decision ourselves...)

8. You can have warm sleeping bags and pillows for every camper OR you can have three sleeping bags for six people and pile on a ton of blankets to make up the difference. The blankets worked surprisingly well.

9. And while we are talking about the whole sleeping situation I have a legit camping secret to share. Now, you can be like 99.9% of the whole camping world and lay a tarp down beneath your tent to battle the dew but fail because the water gets between the tent floor and tarp anyways OR you can put the tarp down INSIDE, covering the tent floor, and actually be protected from the dew. Seriously, the dew soaks through the tent floor no matter what, but it won't soak through the tarp on the inside of the tent!

10. finally, you can bring your film major friend to record the whole camping process to turn it into a short documentary OR you can not bring your film major friend to record the whole camping process to turn it into a short documentary.  I'm sure it would be fun either way. :)

Bonus: what is the very best thing about camping with friends?
nobody gets to tell you what time to wake up in the morning.  Sleeping in until 10:00 a.m. is perfectly acceptable!

*A special thanks to my friend Katrina, half of these pictures are her's.

Pete-ing

What THE HECK are they doing on top of a refrigerator???

Its called Pete-ing. And this is how it started:

Once upon a time there was a boy named Pete. He and a friend were hanging out at a girl's apartment really late at night watching a movie with her, but because it was so late they all fell asleep. She fell asleep on the couch and Pete and his friend fell asleep on the floor. At one point that night the girl woke up and went to the bathroom but when she walked back into the living room Pete and his friend had vanished. She had the feeling they hadn't left yet so she walked around the corner into the kitchen and there they were snickering and crouching ON TOP OF THE FRIDGE, clinging to each other so they wouldn't fall off.

Well, later in life Pete married that girl and they lived happily ever after AND then they told me and some friends that story earlier this year and then we created this magical thing called "Pete-ing." (This is the part where I give credit to Jazlyn Wright and Catelynn Schroeder for developing the idea, while me and Vi Carlson made it a reality!)

This the the first recorded instance of Pete-ing since the original Pete sat on that first fridge (and Pete loves snacks so we thought we'd take some with us!)

And since then we've been Pete-ing every chance we get!!

So feel free to join in the fun! Let me know about any Pete-ing adventures you have :)

FANGIRLING: Sophie Scholl

Today I'm "FANGIRLING" a little more seriously than usual, and I'm its over the spiritually courageous

Sophie Scholl

one of my heroes

At the age of 21 Sophie was executed by guillotine after being convicted of high treason.  Her crime was publishing some anti-war leaflets that were printed by the White Rose (a non-violent resistance group that encouraged people to passively resist the Nazis) in 1943 at Munich University.  Eventually a copy of the leaflet made it out of Germany and millions of copies were made and then dropped by plane over parts of Germany. Its was re-entitled The Manifesto of Munich Students. You can read it here. But its pretty boring and all political, and Sophie didn't even help write it, just spread it around. I suggest watching Sophie Scholl: The Final Days to get a better idea of her morals and courage. Its a German film I watched last year at the International Cinema that introduced me to who she was.

I just love that she had the courage to stand up and do what she knew was right even if nobody would stand with her.  "How can we expect fate to let a righteous cause prevail when there is hardly anyone who will give himself up undividedly to a righteous cause?"

So yesterday I said that I added this to My Happy Board Of Awesome Things That Are Awesome:

Just to clarify, something has to be REEEEEEEEALLY important to me to go on there.  Sophie's final words were "Die Sonne scheint noch" or "the sun still shines" (it even says so here). Even when she was in jail, on trial, and about to be executed she knew the the sun was still shining, there is still light in the world, and that things weren't over.

She also said "I know that life is a doorway to eternity, and yet my heart so often gets lost in petty anxieties. It forgets the great way home that lies before it." Ah, doesn't that just speak to your soul?

Back at School

Well, its the first Saturday since school started and what did I do all day?

slept in until noon
showered
ate 2 sandwiches
PINTEREST!
put a random braid in my hair
more Pinterest
and added this:

and this:

to this

My Happy Board Of Awesome Things That Are Awesome.
Don't be fooled by its awesomeness, it is actually the least ambitious craft possible. All I did was cut paper to a regular photo size, put it in the frame, and write four words (for their meaning check out my Sophie Scholl post).

*Note that this list didn't include any homework, which I have plenty to do. Its not a likely addition either, although eating pizza might be.

HAPPY WEEKEND EVERYBODY!!!
